Establishment and timing are critical, with planting typically occurring later once soil temperatures are warm enough for reliable germination, and ongoing spring frost risk needing to be managed. As a result, hybrid maturity and early vigour play a key role in achieving consistent crop performance.

Maize is primarily grown for silage, particularly within irrigated dairy systems in Canterbury, where it provides strong dry matter production and a consistent, energy-dense feed source. It plays an important role in supporting herd performance through winter and acts as a valuable buffer during challenging seasonal conditions.

South Island growers generally require earlier-maturing hybrids that can reach harvest maturity within a shorter growing season. PAC 011 and PAC 081 are well-suited because it combines excellent early vigour with reliable maturity, helping growers achieve consistent silage yields before autumn temperatures decline.
Yes. Advances in hybrid breeding have significantly improved maize performance in cooler regions. Modern early-maturing hybrids establish quickly, utilise shorter growing seasons efficiently and provide reliable silage production across much of Canterbury, the West Coast and selected areas of Otago and Southland where growing conditions are suitable.
Early vigour is one of the most important traits for South Island maize production. Rapid emergence and early growth allow plants to establish before temperatures cool again, improve weed competition and maximise the amount of sunlight captured during the relatively short growing season. Hybrids such as PAC 007 and PAC 144 are recognised for their strong establishment.
The key production risks include cool spring soils, late frosts, shorter growing seasons and delayed crop maturity. Planting into adequately warmed soils and selecting an appropriately early CRM hybrid are the most effective ways to reduce these risks and improve harvest reliability. Good paddock selection and drainage are also important for successful establishment.
Irrigation can substantially increase maize yield by maintaining consistent soil moisture throughout the growing season. Water availability during flowering and grain fill is particularly important for maximising kernel development, starch accumulation and total dry matter production. Where irrigation is available, growers can often consider slightly later-maturing hybrids to capture additional yield potential.
Planting should begin only after soil temperatures are consistently above approximately 10°C and conditions favour rapid germination. In cooler South Island regions, this often means planting later than in the North Island to avoid cold stress and uneven emergence. Waiting for suitable conditions generally results in stronger establishment and more uniform crops.
Grain maize production is generally more limited in the lower South Island due to shorter growing seasons and slower grain dry-down. While grain production can be successful in favourable seasons and warmer locations, maize is more commonly grown for silage because it offers greater harvest reliability and better fits local farming systems. Early to mid-season hybrids provide the greatest chance of success where grain is being considered, such as PAC 081.
